The Future of Journalsim
“To be a journalist is to say hi to everyone, all the time.” -Joel Alonzo
When it comes to the changing face of Journalism, I can see to routes of reaction, despair or excitement.
There are plenty of things to despair about.
Newspaper circulation is declining. With thousands of jobs being lost every year, it has become a very unstable career choice. Newspapers don’t stand a chance against interactive media. Newspapers are still popular, at least among journalism students. But to the masses raised with television and web, newspapers are just too plain.
T.V. news has turned from information to infotainment. The news contains so little information that a half an hour news show couldn’t even fill one page of a newspaper. It’s frustrating to talk to people who get all their information from television because they don’t know enough details to make an informed decision.
Blogging is growing in popularity but cannot take the place of news. There’s too much opinion with little or no reporting. And I don’t know if there is any way to separate bias from blogs. This post for example—totally opinion.
But there is another choice in the future of journalism. The choice to become a creator.
Journalists just getting into the field have got it rough. But they also have opportunity all around. The future of journalism is almost a faceless putty ready to be sculpted.
I am excited to be in this crazy process of an evolving industry. Even with the challenges, I’m ready to help build something new.
